Strawberry Picking

Yesterday we went on a jeep ride out along the Old Ore road. We stopped and gathered strawberries. They were a little green but Sam ate one anyway. Did I get your attention? Think about it - Chihuahuan desert, wild strawberries - not very likely. Actually what we were finding were cactus fruit. Strawberry pitayas have a fruit that in no way resembles a strawberry except in flavor. When ripe, they taste like strawberries. I've been informed they make a great candy or jam. You have to get them off the cactus first, then get the thorns off so you can peel the skin off, but they're worth a few prickles. We didn't take the camera with us, or I'd post a picture of Sam eating his strawberry.

Eric is in San Antonio learning about the upcoming change to Park-net. All the park service websites are about to be regulated and redone to a standard thing. It's supposed to make it easier for people to use and more difficult for a park to mess up or something like that.
