The next part of our vacation was spent in Colorado. We stayed for 5 days at a wonderful cabin in Northwest Colorado in the mountains. Eric's grandfather bought it many years ago as a hunting cabin, and it became a wonderful summer retreat. Eric's cousin Steve owns it now and has been inviting us to visit for years. We finally made it up there, and it was fantastic. Wildflowers were in full bloom everywhere. We saw deer, birds, chipmunks, squirrels, and what might have been a female moose. A fire burned the surrounding forest and barely spared the cabin a couple years ago. I could see trout swimming in the lake below the cabin, and there were people fishing and catching them every day. Thank you Steve and Shelley!
When we left the cabin we went to Breckenridge to visit Loren and Clarene Goodheart, Eric's aunt and uncle. They showed us the ski slopes and where they volunteer in the winter, as well as all over the town and all the sights. We stopped at the waterfront park downtown and listened to a symphony rehearsal. Sam and Awyn both seemed to enjoy the music. Sam tried to rush the orchestra; luckily Eric caught him before he got up on the stage.
Then we wandered south to Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. We didn't spend a lot of time there because it was lunchtime and Sam's naptime. We saw very large pieces of petrified wood and lots of fossils. They also have a homestead site there and it was open, a rare treat as they only open the buildings twice a year.
Next time I'll put up our New Mexico pictures and then you should be caught up, mostly.
